Eight things to do in the Moroccan Sahara
Camel trek into the dunes
Merzouga, Zagora, Erg Chigaga · Sunset, sunrise
The classic way to reach a desert camp: 45–90 minutes on a dromedary from the dune edge at Merzouga, usually timed for sunset. Ask operators how they care for their animals — reputable ones rest them through the heat and limit trek lengths. If riding is uncomfortable, most camps will drive you in by 4x4 instead.
Sandboarding
Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) · Morning, late afternoon
The tall faces of Erg Chebbi make Merzouga the best place in Morocco to try it. Boards are usually free or cheap at camps. The climb back up is the hard part; go early or late, never at midday.
Quad bikes, buggies and 4x4 dune tours
Merzouga, Agafay · Any time outside midday
Quads and buggies are rented by the hour around the edges of Erg Chebbi. A 4x4 day tour is the best way to cover ground a camel cannot: nomad camps, the Khamlia village, fossil beds, and the Dayet Srji lake. Choose operators who keep to marked areas away from camps.
Stargazing
Any camp, best at Erg Chigaga · Clear nights near the new moon
With no light pollution, the desert sky is the highlight for many visitors. Plan your camp night close to the new moon for the darkest sky, and walk a few minutes away from the camp lights. Erg Chigaga, far from any town, is the darkest of all.
Gnawa music in Khamlia
Khamlia, 7 km south of Merzouga · Daytime
Khamlia is home to Gnawa musicians, descendants of sub-Saharan communities, who perform for visitors in the village. It is one of the most genuine cultural stops around Merzouga, and often included on 4x4 tours.
Visiting a nomad family
Around Erg Chebbi · Daytime
Some 4x4 and camel tours stop at a nomad family camp for tea. Done well, it is a real exchange; done badly, it is a photo stop. Ask the operator how the visit is arranged and whether the family is paid.
Traditional sand baths
Merzouga · Summer (July–August)
A local summer tradition: being buried in hot sand, believed to ease joint pain. Offered in Merzouga during the hottest months. Only with a local practitioner, only early or late in the day, and with plenty of water.
Fossils in Erfoud
Erfoud, ~60 km from Merzouga · On the way in or out
The area around Erfoud is rich in marine fossils, worked into everything from tables to sinks in local workshops. A short stop on the road from Fes or Marrakech.
One night or two in the desert?
What fits into each, around Merzouga.
| One night | Two nights | |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 afternoon | Camel trek to camp, sunset | Camel trek to camp, sunset |
| Night | Dinner, music, stargazing | Dinner, music, stargazing |
| Next morning | Sunrise, sandboarding, leave | Sunrise, sandboarding |
| Day 2 | — | 4x4 tour: Khamlia, nomads, Dayet Srji |
| Day 2 evening | — | Quad or buggy, second sunset |
One night covers the essentials. A second night turns the desert from a stop into a place, and is the only way to do a full 4x4 day without rushing. See 4-day tours from Marrakech for itineraries with two desert nights.
Sahara activities: frequently asked questions
What is there to do in the Sahara Desert in Morocco?
The main activities are a camel trek into the dunes at sunset, a night in a desert camp with dinner and music, sunrise from a dune crest, sandboarding, quad bikes or buggies, and 4x4 tours to nomad camps, the Gnawa village of Khamlia, and seasonal lakes. Stargazing is a highlight on any clear night. Most of this happens around Merzouga and Erg Chebbi.
Is a camel ride in the Sahara ethical?
It can be. Reputable operators keep the dromedaries in good condition, rest them during the heat of the day, limit the weight and distance they carry, and use them only for short treks. Ask about animal care before booking, watch how the animals are treated, and choose the 4x4 transfer if you are unsure.
How long is a camel ride in Merzouga?
Usually 45 to 90 minutes each way between the edge of Erg Chebbi and your camp, depending on how deep in the dunes the camp sits. Longer treks with a night in a remote nomad-style camp can be arranged with local operators.
Can you go sandboarding in Morocco?
Yes. Erg Chebbi near Merzouga has the tallest dunes in Morocco, up to about 150 m, and is the best place for sandboarding. Most camps lend boards for free or a small fee. There are no lifts — you walk up — so the best sessions are in the cool of the morning or late afternoon.
Is quad biking in the Sahara safe?
With a reputable operator and the safety briefing, yes. Wear the helmet and closed shoes provided, stay with the guide, and avoid riding in the heat of the day. Children should ride as passengers or on smaller quads designed for them.
