Which Merzouga camp should I book?
A standard camp (about €25–50 per person, shared bathrooms) is fine from March to May and September to November. A luxury camp (about €80–150+, en-suite tent, real bed) earns its price in winter and for families. Whatever the tier, choose the camp deepest in the dunes you can: the ride time from the dune edge decides how remote the night feels.

Six questions to ask any camp

How long is the ride from the dune edge?

This decides how remote the camp feels more than anything else. 15 minutes means you can hear the road; 60–90 minutes means silence. Ask for the number.

Is the tent private, and is the bathroom in it?

"Private tent" and "private bathroom" are sold separately. If an en-suite matters, confirm it in writing.

What happens if I can't ride a camel?

Most camps will drive you in by 4x4 at no extra cost if you ask when booking — useful with back problems or small children.

How is the camp heated in winter?

From December to February nights can approach freezing. Ask how many blankets there are, or whether the tent has a heater.

Is the camp licensed?

Licensed camps work with registered guides and follow local rules on location and waste. Ask the operator; a vague answer is an answer.

Are drinks included?

Mint tea and water usually are. Soft drinks are extra, and alcohol is not served at most camps — ask before you assume you can bring your own.

Questions & answers

Merzouga desert camps: frequently asked questions

How much does a desert camp in Merzouga cost?

A standard camp costs about €25–50 per person per night, including dinner, breakfast and the camel ride in. A luxury camp with an en-suite tent, proper bed and hot shower costs about €80–150 or more. Prices rise around Christmas, New Year and Easter. Booking directly in Merzouga is usually cheaper than buying the same camp through a Marrakech agency.

Is a luxury desert camp in Merzouga worth it?

It is worth it in winter, when a real bed, a hot shower and good blankets make a cold night comfortable, and for couples or families who value a private bathroom. In spring and autumn a well-located standard camp can be the better experience: the stars, the silence and the sunrise are the same, and the location in the dunes matters more than the furniture.

Do Merzouga desert camps have toilets and showers?

Yes, almost all do. Standard camps have a shared toilet and shower block, sometimes with limited hot water. Comfort and luxury camps usually have private bathrooms inside or attached to each tent, with hot showers heated by solar power or gas.

Is it cold at night in the Merzouga desert?

From December to February, yes: night temperatures in the dunes can fall close to 0 °C even after a warm day. Camps provide heavy blankets and some luxury camps have heaters. Bring a warm layer and a hat. From May to September nights are warm, and many travellers sleep outside the tent.

Can you stay two nights in a Merzouga camp?

Yes, and it is worth it if you want sunrise and sunset without rushing, a 4x4 day to the nomad camps, Khamlia and the Dayet Srji lake, or simply time in the dunes. Most 3-day tours from Marrakech include one camp night; ask for a 4-day version or book the second night directly.
