Sahara Desert

Zagora & the Draa
The closest true Sahara to Marrakech at 6–7 hours. Smaller dunes, but the only desert that works in two days.
Agafay Desert
A rocky stone desert 45 minutes from Marrakech with no sand dunes. Good for a sunset, not a substitute for the Sahara.

Morocco destinations: frequently asked questions
What are the best places to visit in Morocco?
The classic circuit is Marrakech, the Sahara at Merzouga, Fes, and Chefchaouen — it covers an imperial city, real desert, the world's largest car-free medina, and the blue north in about ten days. If you have a week, drop Chefchaouen. If you have four days, do Marrakech plus a High Atlas or Agafay day trip and skip the Sahara, because the desert needs three days to be worth the drive.
How many days do you need in Morocco?
Seven days covers Marrakech, a 3-day Sahara circuit, and Fes at a reasonable pace. Ten days adds Chefchaouen or the Atlantic coast without rushing. Four or five days is enough for Marrakech plus day trips to the High Atlas, Agafay, Ouzoud, or Essaouira, but not enough to reach Erg Chebbi and back properly.
What is the best time of year to visit Morocco?
March to May and September to November are the strongest overall — mild in the cities, comfortable in the desert, and clear in the mountains. The desert south is best October to April and genuinely hostile in July and August, when it regularly exceeds 45 °C. The High Atlas reverses this: April to October is the trekking window, with snow at altitude in winter.
Which Morocco destinations can be combined in one trip?
Marrakech pairs naturally with the High Atlas, Agafay, Essaouira, and the Sahara — all are day trips or circuits departing the city. Fes pairs with Chefchaouen (about 4 hours) and with Merzouga (7–8 hours). The efficient long circuit runs Marrakech → Sahara → Fes → Chefchaouen one way, so you never repeat a road, flying home from Fes or Tangier.
