How to see the gorges well
Walk past the first bend in Todra. Most visitors stop where the coaches park. Ten minutes’ walk further into the canyon, the crowds thin out and the walls close in.
Drive up to the Dades switchbacks. The famous hairpin road is about 25–30 km into the gorge from Boumalne Dades. Some tours skip it to save time; ask your driver in advance if you want to stop at the viewpoint.
Visit the Valley of Roses in spring. Around Kelaat M’Gouna, west of the Dades, Damask roses are harvested in late April and May. Outside that window, the valley is still worth a short stop for rose water and oil.
Look at the palm groves around Tinghir. Guided walks through the gardens and the old ksar give a sense of how the oases are farmed, and are a good break from the vehicle.

Todra & Dades gorges: frequently asked questions
Which is better, Todra Gorge or Dades Gorge?
They are different experiences, and most desert tours from Marrakech include both. Todra Gorge is the more dramatic single sight: you walk into a narrow canyon with walls up to about 300 m high. The Dades Gorge is a longer valley you drive through, known for its eroded rock formations and the hairpin road high in the gorge. If you only have time for one, choose Todra.
Where is the Todra Gorge?
The Todra (Todgha) Gorge is about 15 km north of Tinghir, in south-eastern Morocco, on the road between Ouarzazate and Merzouga. It is about 180 km from Merzouga and about 55 km east of the Dades Valley. The paved road runs right into the narrowest part of the canyon.
Do you need to pay to visit the Todra Gorge?
No, the gorge itself is free. Local guides offer walks to the palm groves and villages around Tinghir for a fee, and parking attendants may ask for a small tip. Climbing routes are best done with a local climbing guide.
What is the Valley of Roses?
The Valley of Roses is the area around Kelaat M'Gouna, west of the Dades Gorge, where Damask roses are grown for rose water and oil. The flowers are harvested in late April and May, and the town holds a rose festival in May. Rose products are sold year-round along the road.
Is it worth staying a night in the Dades Valley?
Yes. On a 3-day desert tour from Marrakech, the Dades Valley is the usual first night: it splits the long drive to Merzouga and puts you in the gorges in the morning light. Independent travellers can add a second night to hike in the side valleys.
