What is Ait Ben Haddou?
Ait Ben Haddou is a fortified earthen village (ksar) on the Ounila River, on the old caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. It is about 4 hours from Marrakech over the Tizi n’Tichka pass and 30 km from Ouarzazate. Almost every desert tour from Marrakech stops here on day 1.

What to see

Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate and the road between

Ait Ben Haddou ksar

Cross the Ounila River and climb through the lanes of the ksar to the ruined granary at the top. The view over the valley is the reason to go early, before the tour buses.

Tizi n'Tichka pass

The highest paved pass in the High Atlas, about 2,260 m. The switchbacks are the most dramatic part of the drive from Marrakech.

Telouet kasbah

A short detour off the N9: the crumbling palace of the Glaoui family, with some of the finest painted interiors in southern Morocco.

Atlas Studios

One of the largest film studios in the world by area, on the edge of Ouarzazate. Guided tours walk through sets used by international productions.

Taourirt Kasbah

The Glaoui family's kasbah in the centre of Ouarzazate, partly restored and open to visitors.

Fint Oasis

A palm oasis about 15 km from Ouarzazate, quiet and green against the bare hills — a good stop if you stay the night.

Questions & answers

Ait Ben Haddou & Ouarzazate: frequently asked questions

Is Ait Ben Haddou worth visiting?

Yes. It is one of the best-preserved earthen ksars in Morocco and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. If you take a desert tour from Marrakech, it is almost always included on day 1. On its own it is a long day trip — about 8–9 hours of driving round trip over the Tizi n'Tichka pass — so it is best combined with a desert tour or an overnight in Ouarzazate.

Can you do Ait Ben Haddou as a day trip from Marrakech?

Yes. Ait Ben Haddou is about 190 km from Marrakech, around 4 hours each way over the Tizi n'Tichka pass. Day tours leave around 7–8 am, stop at the pass and often Telouet, spend 1.5–2 hours at the ksar and in Ouarzazate, and return in the evening. It is a long day; a 2- or 3-day desert tour includes the same stops with far less backtracking.

Which films were shot at Ait Ben Haddou?

Ait Ben Haddou and the nearby Atlas Studios have appeared in many productions, including Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, and the Game of Thrones series, where the ksar stood in for the city of Yunkai. Local guides at the ksar will point out the locations.

Do you pay to enter Ait Ben Haddou?

Walking into the ksar itself is generally free. Some families who own houses in the ksar charge a small fee to enter them or their rooftops, and local guides offer paid tours. Carry small change in dirhams.

Is Ouarzazate worth staying in?

Ouarzazate is a practical base rather than a destination: comfortable hotels, Atlas Studios and the Taourirt Kasbah. Staying a night lets you see Ait Ben Haddou at sunrise or sunset without the crowds, and splits the long drive to Zagora or Merzouga in two.
